Characters with vs. without spaces

"Characters" counts every character including spaces and line breaks; "No spaces" counts only visible characters. Different places require different rules, so we show both.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything is counted inside your browser — your text is never sent to or stored on a server.

How are words counted?

Words are tokens separated by whitespace. It works the same for any language.

What encoding are bytes?

UTF-8 (ASCII letters = 1 byte, many non-Latin characters = 2–4 bytes).
